California Grade 6 Practice: What Is Covered and How to Use It
This guide says what the California content standards cover in Grade 6, by subject, how the state test fits in, and how to use the practice on passvana.
What the California content standards cover in Grade 6
English language arts
The California Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy. In grades six through eight they are organized into Reading (Literature and Informational Text), Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language, with literacy standards for history/social studies, science and technical subjects.
Mathematics
The California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. At this grade they are organized in five domains: Ratios and Proportional Relationships, The Number System, Expressions and Equations, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability.
Science
The California Next Generation Science Standards (CA NGSS). California's preferred model for grades six through eight is integrated: each year mixes physical science, life science, and earth and space science (the Preferred Integrated Course Model in the California Science Framework). The practice follows that model.
History-Social Science
The History-Social Science Content Standards for California Public Schools. Grade 6 is titled "World History and Geography: Ancient Civilizations."
The state test
California's state test, the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP), starts in Grade 3, so Grade 6 students take it again: students in grades three through eight, and grade eleven, take the Smarter Balanced assessments in English language arts/literacy and mathematics. The California Science Test is given in grades five and eight and once in high school, so it is not a Grade 6 test.
passvana practice is not the state test and does not copy it. There is no exam on these pages: it is practice, with an explanation for every answer.
How to use the practice
- Available now: English language arts, mathematics and science.
- A parent or guardian buys and signs in. We never ask for a child's name or email.
- Pick a subject, or practice across the whole grade, and work through the questions together. Read the explanation after every answer, right or wrong.
- Use the Progress tab to see which subject needs more time.
- A pass is for a fixed time (one, four or six months, or a year), paid once. It does not renew by itself, and buying again adds time to a running pass.
- New questions are added on a regular basis, every couple of weeks.
